City of Worcester Sports Awards
Worcester City Council and Sport Worcester celebrated the city’s talent at its annual Sport Awards in September 2012. Running for many year, this prestigious annual event celebrates the achievements of the people and clubs who make our local sporting community so successful. Our 2012 awards evening, which is aligned to the national BBC Sports Awards, was the biggest and best yet!
With 16 awards being presented at Worcestershire County Cricket Club on September 20th 2012 by Olympic rower Mr Purchase and Paralympic archer Miss Clarke the night was full of gold and silver medals and trophies alike. The awards evening was a chance to celebrate some of Worcester's finest sportsmen and women, coaches and clubs as well as the unsung volunteers.
Former King's School Worcester pupil Zac Purchase said: “It has been a fantastic evening which has celebrated not only the wealth of sporting talent which Worcester has to offer, but also the dedication of so many coaches and volunteers whose support is so vital to success."
Among the winners were Jason Copsey, who was named Senior Male Sports Person of the Year, for his role as team captain and founder of the University of Worcester Athletics Club. He is targeting a place at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The title of Senior Female Sport Person of the Year went to Chelsea Weston who plays for Birmingham City Ladies FC and has been selected for the England Under 23 squad.
Young boxer Trent Smith was named Junior Male Sports Person of the Year while the honour of Junior Female Sports Person of the Year went to Charlotte Collins who has just been selected for the England Under 19 Netball Team.
