Mayor's Diary 5th - 11th July 2010
My week began musically with a visit to the Guildhall from ‘Chorus Semper Virit’, a choir from Vernon in France, with whom Worcester has a friendship pact. My thanks to Peter Rogers of the Twinning Association and to Jacques D Romer who arranged the visit. They sang to me in English and it was both beautiful and emotional. Two groups of students from Bologna in Italy, under the watchful eye of Francesco La Rovere, also visited the parlour for a talk and tour.
Later June and I joined the Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania for the international basketball match between England and Lithuania at the University of Worcester. Basketball is Lithuania’s national sport and England were sadly pipped to the post 78-73. My thanks to Professor David Green and staff at the University for a memorable evening.
On Wednesday attended the showcase at the Voices and Visions Festival in Malvern. We have so much young musical talent in Worcestershire and the whole show was a huge success.
On Thursday my consort accompanied me to the King’s School where we were joined by headmaster Tim Keyes for a service in the Cathedral led by the Bishop of Worcester. My best wishes to all the students who have left to further their education or start employment.
Friday began at Nunnery Wood School where June and I attended the official opening of the outdoor classroom. Elena Lengthorn must be so proud of the Eco Club Students who designed and created it. I will return in the future to see how the classroom and garden have developed.
I then helped launch the city’s ‘Take Pride in Worcester’ litter campaign, which you can read more about elsewhere in this paper.
That evening the Mayoress and I welcomed 130 guests to my Inaugural Banquet (not one empty chair in sight). My thanks to Graham Downie and John Phillpott, my two main speakers, and special thanks to Marc Bayliss who proposed the toast to the Queen.
The week ended with a visit to the Cathedral for the Worcester Provincial Masonic Annual service and lunch. My thanks to the Provincial Grand Master R.G.H. Goddard for a wonderful lunch in the Chapter House and very impressive service. My best wishes to all involved.
