Mayor's Diary 1st - 7th February 2010
Alyson Craigan gives music lessons at city schools. She made me smile on Tuesday when, with inspiration and a violin, she led the children of Warndon Primary in a lovely medley of songs at the opening of the Lavender Children’s Centre. Pupils of St Joseph RC School performed too and were enjoyed by Centre Manager, Becky Llewellyn and local mums while the babies gurgled.
By contrast HM Chief Inspector of Prisons Dame Anne Owers received undivided attention when she shared her experiences at the inaugural Worcester Lecture in the cathedral, which was arranged in cooperation with the university.
Fran and I were also in the cathedral earlier in the week for evensong before Devina Rowe introduced us to a display depicting 100 years of girl guiding. Whatever your beliefs, the music, history and atmosphere of the cathedral evensong should be experienced.
In the Guildhall I met Duncan Sharkey who is to be the new managing director of the city council. I am glad he was impressed by the Mayor’s Parlour. I think you need to have a respect for the past to be able to effectively plan for the future.
Coincidently I met Tom Wareing this week at a charity cabaret put on by Malcolm Hall the mayor of Redditch. As well as being a regular Worcester News letter page contributor Tom is the father of the city council’s former boss David Wareing.
My confidence was knocked when I visited Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College, though it made me smile. I was quizzed by students studying citizenship and it was going well until I was silenced by a budding Jeremy Paxman who asked, "Have you got a Nintendo DSI or an MP3?"
