Mayor's Diary 15th-21st February 2010
Flying mayors Derrick Killingworth of Bewdley and Chris Parsons of Pershore ran with me and Rotary’s Allah Ditta in Tuesday’s pancake race. Even in robes we could not compare with the university cheer leaders. After their race they formed a human pyramid in an Arabesque pose – surely a first for the Guildhall.
Later in the week young Worcestershire musicians played in the baroque style as their tutors danced. The first time someone has danced in the Assembly Room for thirty years.
The Worcestershire Association of Women Graduates were excellent company when they visited with Jane Kerley. Another charming and intelligent guest was Dr Kathryn Jones, Chancellor of University of Minnesota Duluth, USA. She was comfortable with our culture and history and understood its dark humour. Barbara Green also called in to tell me about Hereford Police Male Voice Choir’s concert for St Richard’s at St George’s RC Church on 13 March.
At the Bank House our host was Worcester South Rotary President Hilary Day. Other guests at her dinner included former Worcester News Editor Stewart Gilbert and Rockie Hudson from TV’s ‘Growing out of Trouble’.
Events also included Brian J Burton’s spooky production of ‘Gaslight’ at the Swan Theatre and a visit to County Hall for the Youth Parliament elections.
On Saturday Brian Bullock and Worcester Re-enactors put on a fascinating ‘Living History’ event around the city. Then on Sunday we were at the Guildhall to celebrate the Year of the Tiger with Frankie Tsang, the Worcestershire Chinese Association and university students. After crackers, dragon dancing and a kung fu display we were treated to modern and traditional music and a Chinese drama before a delicious buffet at the Four Seasons Restaurant.
