Free swimming just got better!

Worcester’s free swimming sessions have proved so popular that they are to be extended as of 1 April.

Keen swimmers aged 60 and over and young people aged 16 and under have been able to benefit from the sessions for a year, thanks to a 2 year government initiative.

Now the sessions are being extended to include people aged 50 and over and the parents or carers of young people aged 16 and under during the weekends.

In November, the city council announced that the number of swimming sessions at the pool had increased by over one third to a staggering 25,000 extra swims - since the free sessions were introduced in April.

As part of a nationwide initiative to offer free swimming nationally in the run up to The Olympic Games in London in 2012, the city council is urging those eligible to take advantage of the offer.

Councillor Francis Lankester, Cabinet member for Safer and Stronger Communities at Worcester City Council said : "We are absolutely delighted that this invaluable initiative has now been extended to include those who are 50 and over and the parents and carers of young people. We have seen swimming figures soar since the it was launched last April.  We are confident that numbers will continue to rise for the next 12 months also!"

"Not only is swimming a perfect way to maintain health and fitness, it is also a very necessary life skill. Our advice is to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity if you are eligible."

The scheme is not limited to those people who can swim; sessions in water confidence will be held at various times in the future.

The free swimming sessions will be available at Worcester Swimming Pool during normal public swimming sessions. Pool timetables can be downloaded from www.harpersfitness.co.uk; alternatively call 01905 202 41 and a copy will be sent to you.

The scheme is due to finish on 31 March 2011.
