Council launches Inclusive Employer Award scheme to help out of work residents

A gourmet burger bar based in Worcester’s Arches is the first business to receive an Inclusive Employer Award from the City Council, after giving work experience to two young people who were struggling to get into work.

One of them, Lizzie Smith, worked with Mike, Head Chef at The Burger Shop for two weeks in May and has now secured a Commis Chef apprenticeship with the exclusive Cottage in the Wood Hotel in Malvern, thanks to her time at the restaurant.

“The experience gave me confidence, and opened my eyes. I really enjoyed the atmosphere in the kitchen and realised this was where I wanted to be,” said Lizzie, who had been on benefits since leaving care.

Rupert Davidson, Restaurant Manager at The Burger Shop said: “This industry is fantastic and has a wide range of different opportunities and career paths yet less and less young people are getting into it. If we can help encourage people like Lizzie to get back into the work place, it benefits them with so many different skills sets and helps our industry thrive.”

Both of the young people on placement at The Burger Shop attended a 12 week ‘Be Your Own Boss’ course, delivered by Malvern Business Academy and funded by the City Council’s ‘Inclusive Growth’ programme.

Cllr Lucy Hodgson, Chair of Worcester City Council’s Place and Economic Sub Committee said: “The Burger Shop has helped to transform two young people’s lives:  work experience is absolutely critical to helping our most vulnerable residents to gain the confidence and skills they need to succeed.

“The award scheme recognises the businesses that are helping us to ensure that no one is left behind as our economy grows.”

Worcester businesses providing work experience, taster days; job trials or employment opportunities for residents on the council’s Inclusive Growth programme can apply for an Inclusive Employer Award.
