Worcester City Council has announced an event for landlords in the city to help them with new legally-required duties under the Renters’ Right Act.

From 15 December, all landlords will be obliged to join the new Register your Property Scheme or face a fine of up to £7,000.

The City Council is holding a Landlords’ Forum event at the Guildhall on Thursday 26 November to explain the new system and answer any questions. Doors open at 3pm, with the event starting at 3.30pm.

Councillor Katie Collier, Vice Chair of the City Council’s Communities Committee, said: “The Renters’ Rights Act is being rolled out in stages, with the first phase introducing several additional rights for tenants.

“Now the new registration rules are coming in for landlords, and this Landlords’ Forum event will be a great opportunity to hear from the experts. You’ll learn all about the Register your Property Scheme and how it’s vital to act quickly and avoid any penalties.

Under the new scheme, landlords are required to register their properties on the Government database if they are currently under let or become let during the roll-out period of 15 December 2026 to 14 March 2027.

The onus is on the landlord to register. However, landlords will be able to delegate uploading of some information to their Managing Agent.

Landlords will be required to record their personal details, the property address, the number of occupants and bedrooms as well as the amount of rent received for the property.

Gas, electrical and energy performance certificates are also required to be uploaded, to ensure the property is compliant with health and safety standards.

The online Register will open next month. Printed forms will also be available if landlords are not able to register online.

There will be an annual charge of £65 per property registered.

The Register your Property Scheme will also have a dedicated helpline service to assist and support users. Details will be released when the scheme goes live.

The Landlords’ Forum event on 26 November will also provide an opportunity for landlords to learn about Worcester City Council's increased focus on early intervention and homelessness prevention as part of its upcoming Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Strategy. Landlords will be able to share insights and feedback to help shape the development of services for the benefit of both private sector tenants and landlords.
