Mayor of Worcester sends poppies to Paddington

The Mayor of Worcester has helped to set the wheels rolling on an unusual commemoration of Armistice Day.

Councillor Louis Stephen joined Cllr Pat Agar, Worcester City Council's Armed Forces Champion, and members of the Royal British Legion and the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters to place commemorative wreaths on a Poppy Train at Worcester Shrub Hill Station.

On its journey from Worcester to London Paddington, the GWR train will collect wreaths from localcommunities at each station it stops at. All the wreaths will then be laid at the War Memorial in Paddington station in a service tomorrow (11 November), marking Armistice Day.

The Mayor said: "It was a great honour to join Worcester veterans in this unusual, but nonetheless solemn act of Remembrance. It is moving to know that the lives of Worcester soldiers who laid down their lives to defend our freedoms will not only be remembered in their home city on Armistice Day, but also in a service in the capital."
