Tree planted in Worcester to mark HM The King’s Coronation

A commemorative tree was planted in Gheluvelt Park in Worcester on Tuesday (6 May) by The Lord-Lieutenant of Worcestershire to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, which took place on 6 May 2023.
The Davidia involucrata (Handkerchief Tree) has been especially chosen as it will bloom in May each year and, with its fabulous display of white flowers, will be a wonderful way to remember the Coronation each year.
Mrs Beatrice Grant, Lord-Lieutenant, said: “It is an honour to be able to plant this tree at Gheluvelt Park and create a sustainable, living legacy to mark His Majesty’s Coronation.
“This beautiful tree is the perfect addition to the park, and I hope visitors will enjoy the stunning white flowers every spring for years to come.”
Trees have been planted around the County over the last few years to commemorate the Coronation and to celebrate His Majesty’s passion for the environment.
This initiative aligns with His Majesty’s interest in nature, having held a number of patronages for wildlife and conservation charities during his time serving as the Prince of Wales.
Councillor Zoe Cookson, Chair of Worcester City Council’s Environment Committee, said:
“We’re delighted that the Lord-Lieutenant has chosen Gheluvelt Park as the site for planting a tree to commemorate the second anniversary of His Majesty King Charles III’s Coronation.
“Gheluvelt Park is a much-loved destination for families throughout the year, and the addition of the Davidia involucrata will bring even more beauty to this tranquil green space in the heart of Barbourne.
“While the park officially opened in 1922, some of its trees are even older, and we hope this new addition will be cherished just as much by future generations.”
