What’s in a name? That’s the question for Worcester residents as they are asked to help choose the name of a city park.

The park between Hawkwood Crescent and Oldbury Road has been a popular destination for generations – but it’s never had an official name. Until now.

Worcester City Council and the Friends of Laugherne Brook Local Nature Reserve have worked with children at the nearby Oldbury Park Primary School to come up with a list of six potential names for the park.

Residents can vote for their favourite name here.

Councillor Zoe Cookson, Chair of the City Council’s Environment Committee, said: “I think a lot of people will be amazed to learn that this much-loved and well-used park does not currently have a name. Back in the days when it used to have a football pitch it was commonly known as the recreation ground, but the time has come for it to be given a proper title.

“Giving this popular park a name will not only raise its profile, it will also open up new opportunities to attract funding for improvements, so I want to encourage people to vote for their favourite choice of name at www.worcester.gov.uk/voiceit.”

Worcester residents can choose from the following as their favourite name for the park:

  • Ambrose Park
  • Comer Fields Park
  • Coppertops Park
  • Foxwood Park
  • Hawkwood Park
  • Laugherne Park.

Some of the names are taken from roads and features in the area, while others reflect its history.

Laugherne, the name of the brook that flows through the park, is a word derived from the Celtic for fox.

The park is thought to have once been the location of the Ambrose Mill, which sat beside the brook. Later, the popular Coppertops pub was a popular destination opposite the park.

The vote to choose the park’s name closes on Friday 27 March.
