From December 2005, a partner means:
- a person you are married to.
- have a civil partnership with.
- a person you live with as if you were their husband, wife or civil partner.
A civil partner is a formal arrangement that give same sex partners the same legal status as a married couple. For further information on Civil Partnerships can be found on the Directgov website.
